The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. (SCA) is an international, non-profit, educational organization dedicated to researching
and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Our “Known World” consists of 19 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around the world. Participants, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which may feature tournaments, arts exhibits, classes, workshops, dancing, feasts, and more. Our “royalty” hold courts at which they recognize and honor members for their contributions to the group.
What is an “Anachronism”? –Something out of place, or time.
The SCA has members who study every aspect of medieval life. We are brewers, archers, calligraphers, heralds, fencers, spinners,
blacksmiths, costumers, dancers, cooks and armoured fighters. We enjoy feasting, spinning, needlepoint, equestrian, leatherwork, beadwork, socializing, live weapons competition, period music, theatre and much more. If someone did it back then, you can bet someone is trying to do it now! (We even have a Kingdom member who raised a flock of documented medieval chickens!)
The goal is to learn through doing, then doing and shar
ing ones subject knowledge with others. The SCA encourages historical research and active recreation, and most importantly: preserving a code of conduct, mentality and philosophy that, in many ways, is lacking in the modern world.
The SCA is an active participant group dedicated to re-creating medieval skills, traditions and activities actually documented in recorded history. Fairies, elves and other mythical beings will be better found at Renaissance Festivals and the like.
The SHIRE of GREYHOPE is the LOCAL CHAPTER of the SCA Known World, based in Northwestern Indiana. The Shire consists of Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties.
